THE COMMUNITY FOUNDED UPON A ROCK – 1911
A massive boulder at the district’s northeast edge contains a faint image of a bird-shaped shadow on the rock at certain times of day. The neighborhood derives its name from this geological feature.
Eagle Rock is one of seven communities that make up the Northeast section of Los Angeles (NELA). An estimated 24,000 residents live in Eagle Rock. There are approximately 600 businesses. Eagle Rock is actually much cooler than the metropolitan Los Angeles area as it is slightly higher in elevation and is reported to hold an average tempeture of 72 degrees. You will certainly appreciate the Summer Nights living in Eagle Rock.
Eagle Rock is the site of Occidental College, designed by famed architect Myron Hunt and built in 1914. Now known to have its most famous alumni: PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA who attended the college in his youth.
With its’ close proximity to Hollywood and the major motion picture studios, this community has often been a favored choice as a film location. Movies filmed here include Top Gun, Hunt for Red October, Reservoir Dogs, Day of the Locust. Occidental College served as the campus in the 90's television series, Beverly Hills, 90210. Teen Wolf was filmed on the 5200 block of Shearin Avenue.
Ben Affleck, a former Occidental College student, lived on Hill Drive with then-roommate and co-writer Matt Damon while they wrote the script for Good Will Hunting. Eagle Rock is also home to some very renowned musicians and quite a few of your basic rock stars too, however it’s best to respect their privacy after all that is what home is for.
The entire neighborhood has experienced gentrification for the last 15 years as young urban professionals, finding themselves priced out of areas like Los Feliz, Hollywood Hills, and Silver Lake, have found affordable housing there. Eagle Rock is inhabited by a wide variety of ethnicities and socioeconomic groups, but it is best known as an eclectic gathering of Hipsters. Many well known Artists and Entertainment industry types call Eagle Rock their home. This area truly has a small town neighborhood feel to it, but do not let this humble description fool you, Eagle Rock has its version of “Rodeo Dr”. If you just take the time to tour along side HILL DR., which runs east and west bound, north of Colorado Bl. There you will see magnificent homes restored to their grand luster. Eagle Rock also has its share of some newer architectural homes built along the hillsides with incredible views in all directions. Eagle Rock is also freeway friendly making it easy to get to Hollywood, Downtown, Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena with great ease of access to street or freeway travel.
ARCHITECTUAL DIVERSITY:
Eagle Rock has many historic and architecturally significant homes, many done in the Craftsman, Georgian, Streamline Modern, Art Deco, Mediterranean and Spanish/Mission styles.
Eagle Rock also has newer architectural homes built along many of its beautiful hillsides granting them incredible views in all directions, some of which have views to the ocean.

BORDERING COMMUNITIES:
Highland Park and South Pasadena to the South/South East.
Pasadena is to the east.

Northeast Los Angeles Art Organization
On the 2nd Saturday of the Month the NELA Art Walk highlights the art in our local community.
However the area that the Art-Walk covers will require a little driving or even better if you bike through the area as it covers Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Glassell Park, Garvanza, Hermon, Montecito Heights and Mt. Washington.
FREE SUMMER CONCERTS IN THE PARK:
An annual tradition at the Eagle Rock Recreational Center Park. What a great way to spend time with family, friends and neighbors, enjoying music under the stars.
EAGLE ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL: (October)
An annual event where the Colorado Blvd. Corridor will have as many as 25 Stages for musical act to perform in the streets and in many of the business establishments. This event starts in the late afternoon and usually goes into the night, also a way to meet and greet your fellow neighbors and enjoy an evening of street fare with the family.
